The Scholar-Practitioner

What is a scholar-practitioner?

     A scholar-practitioner stays current on the latest scientific research in one’s field of practice, and amends their practice when research reveals that a therapy technique has been improved, or that a new type of therapy has been scientifically proven to be more beneficial.  A scholar-practitioner maintains access to databases of scientific journals in their field, or subscribes to them, as a part of a lifelong commitment to evidence-based practice, and not simply as a means to an end to obtain a terminal degree in their field.

Does this mean that scholar-practitioners will only use the most modern therapy techniques?  

      Not at all, because the latest research has proven that the original psychodynamic therapies are highly effective.  In some cases, they are the most effective treatment.  And, a scholar-practitioner is not going to jump on every new therapy bandwagon before the therapy has been validated scientifically.  Psychology is a relatively new and evolving discipline, and a commitment to being a scholar-practitioner is an important trait to look for in a psychologist.  My therapy is informed by the latest findings in the fields of neuroscience, epigenetics, interpersonal neurobiology, attachment, communication, social psychology, social anthropology, developmental psychology, primatology, and biology, along with the old wisdom of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic traditions.  I can then tailor an evidence-based treatment plan to the individual.  Being a scholar-practitioner allows my work to evolve along with my clients.
